A battle for life and death
A battle to breathe another breath
A war to save people
The families of the lost kneel on the steeple
Battle scars never fade
Not over a month, a year, a decade
They give and they give, and we take, and we take
We take from them the chance to see daybreak
We promise and we pray but what does it do?
It takes them away and we forget a thank-you
Do we hear the screams? Feel the ground shake?
No, it doesn’t even make us wake
The ones who suffer, suffer alone
They shed their tears over a stone
No honor in the loss
No remembrance as we stare at the cross
They put their life on the line and gave it up for us
And they never regret the breaks and the cuts
What is bravery? What does it mean?
The Coast Guard, Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines
Look at them and see the freedom
They gave their everything and they are the reason
Look at the flag and see the pride
And honor and never forget those who died
A thank-you to all and remember you we will
You are the reason we are free still
